William Clegg QC secures acquittal and crown prosecution service ordered to pay defendant’s costs

William Clegg QC, instructed by John Martin of Howard Kennedy LLP, acted for a schoolmaster accused of anal rape of a female pupil. He was found not guilty of all charges and the Crown Prosecution Service have been ordered to pay all the costs of his defence estimated at in excess of £250,000. It was held that the conduct of the Crown Prosecution Service in firstly bringing the case and secondly by continuing with the prosecution amounted to an “improper act or omission”.
