Tom represented a serving Metropolitan Police Detective, who was accused of gross misconduct in his role supervising an investigation into a dangerous offender.
The case involved a detailed analysis of different investigative strategies, including the approach to police intelligence and consideration of the input provided by specialist police units. The evidence included statements from investigators and required a forensic assessment of crime reports, as well as contemporaneous records showing officer availability and resources at crucial points in the case.
Following a five-day hearing, which was at the culmination of proceedings that had taken nearly four years to come to trial, and included the involvement of the IOPC, the Panel found that the officer’s actions did not amount to a breach of the Professional Standards. Accordingly, there was no basis upon which it could be maintained that there had been either gross misconduct or simple misconduct by the officer in question.
Tom was instructed and assisted by Russell Haldane, Laura Heggie and Beth Jamieson of the Professional Misconduct Team at Taylor Haldane Barlex (THB).
