Austin Stoton prosecuted Tata Steel UK Ltd following the uncontrolled release of a carcinogenic, mutagenic, flammable toxin from a process plant at a facility in Scunthorpe in 2011 for offences contrary to the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Control of Major Accidents Hazards Regulations 1999. Five workers were exposed to the release. The case involved complex expert evidence from automation, electrical, control and mechanical engineers as well as chemists and occupational health specialists. The company was fined £930,000 and ordered to pay all the prosecutions costs.
