In October 2016, Austin Stoton prosecuted EVT Eiberger Verfahrenstechnik GmbH. The German defendant company was a supplier of cleaning and degreasing equipment to the aerospace industry. The equipment had failed resulting in the release of a carcinogenic mutagen at a manufacturing plant. The case turned on the mechanical and software design requirements for process mechanical equipment. The focus of the case was on what amounts to a safety system at law and the requirement under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 to have pressure relief and pressure limiting devices fitted to pressure bearing equipment.
