Prosecution

The Experience of our barristers as prosecutors ranges over all types of criminal conduct from the most serious to the least.

Members of Chambers prosecute on behalf of the CPS, SFO, HSE, ORR and other Government departments and regularly advise in cases of corporate and gross negligence manslaughter as well as health and safety prosecutions.

Brian Altman QC is former first senior Treasury Counsel (Crime) and has prosecuted some of the most serious and high profile cases in the country.

By way of example, Brian prosecuted the 2002 abduction and murder of Amanda ‘Milly’ Dowler (Levi Bellfield), as well as the case of Russell Bishop (the murder of two young girls in 1986 in Brighton); he has also prosecuted cases of terrorism such as John Downey (the case of the alleged former IRA man accused of involvement in the 1982 Hyde Park bombing which led to the political furore over comfort letters given by government to alleged terrorists following the Good Friday Agreement) and Khalid Ali (the case of the Taliban bomb-maker who, having returned to the UK after 5 years in Afghanistan, was apprehended in 2017 when he was about to launch a terror attack on Whitehall). Brian appears in appellate cases in the Court of Appeal as well as the Supreme Court (for example, R v Armel Gnango [2001 UKSC 59; [2012] 1 AC 827).

Richard Matthews QC is standing counsel both to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR). He has prosecuted many of the high-profile health and safety cases in recent years, including R v Total (UK) Ltd & Others (following the explosion and fire at the Buncefield Oil Terminal) and has been instructed in the leading appellate cases concerned with employers’ and directors’ criminal liability in both the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords, including R v Chargot [2008] UKHL 73; [2009] 2 All ER 645.

As well as prosecuting the most serious cases, members of Chambers are also instructed to prosecute across the full range of criminal conduct.
