Nicholas Maggs and Matt Kingswell success in large-scale cocaine importation conspiracy trial

Cases, News 16 Apr 26

Nicholas Maggs and Matt Kingswell, instructed by Ali Shah and Meghan Frazzoni of Alexander Bennett Solicitors, secured a unanimous acquittal for their client facing an allegation of conspiracy to import half a tonne of cocaine into the UK, following a 10-week trial at Lincoln Crown Court.

The prosecution case alleged that the defendant was a core member of an Organised Crime Group that arranged for a series of importations of substantial quantities of cocaine hidden within heavy machinery. The case was particularly complex as the importations were said to have run parallel to a missing trader intra-community [MTIC] fraud carried out by the same group that focused on the purchase and sales of significant quantities of various metals. The prosecution sought to prove that the profits were then laundered through Cryptocurrency trading.

A detailed analysis of significant quantities of telecommunications data and documents concerning the alleged MTIC fraud was required to support the defence case that the defendant did not participate in, and had no knowledge of, the alleged importations. The jury unanimously found in the defendant’s favour.
