Lancashire woman hopes for rethink on drug funding

A Preston woman with cystic fibrosis is hoping talks today could help her get a life saving drug on the NHS.

The drug called Orkambi could extend Lucy Baxter's life by up to 10 years.

Today, the health and social care committee will be discussing Orkambi and other drugs that aren't currently available on the NHS.

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust will be holding a demonstration in Parliament Square in London from 12pm.

They have been campaigning to make Orkambi and other life saving drugs available.

20-year-old Lucy told 2BR that if the NHS funded the drugs it would make a huge difference:

"At the moment all my medication is preventative, just sort of plasters that cover the symptoms up.

"The drugs that are coming through treat the root cause of cystic fibrosis. There are so many drugs coming out and it's so frustrating when they're not being funded for us."

Lucy was in hospital in October for several weeks, but thinks these new drugs could really help reduce admissions for cystic fibrosis sufferers:

"Most of us are in hospital for over two weeks a year which would cost the NHS a lot of money. This drug would prevent that happening so it would work out that the NHS would save money from us and there would be more hospital beds for other people.

"I ended up having around 7 weeks of intravenous antibiotics. That is intrusive and really affected my life as I missed out on work and seeing my friends."
