Campaign against cervical cancer launches in Lancashire

smear test embarrassment #darwen #lancashire 4

A huge campaign's launching across the country, to get more women attending their cervical screening tests.

Public Health England (PHE) say figures are at an all time, 20 year low.

It's hoped this national campaign will now get more of us responding to their cervical screening letter and attending the GP.

Research from PHE shows 9 in 10 women would take a test to help prevent cancer - but a quarter miss their cervical screening.

An average of 407 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in the North West each year, and 112 die. In England, that's around two women every day.

It's estimated that if every woman attended her test, 83% of cervical cancer cases could be prevented.

The national standard for screening is 80% - only 71.8% of women across the North West are going for theirs.

cervical screening phe campaign

Today's new national campaign hopes to:

- Provide practical information about how to make the test more comfortable
- Give reassurance to women, who may be fearful of finding out they have cancer, that screening is not a test for cancer

Dr Rebecca Wagstaff, Deputy Director from the Public Health England North West Centre, said:

“It is very worrying that 1 in 4 women don’t attend their screening appointments and particularly as Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women under the age of 35.

"I would urge all women that when they receive their invitation letter to make sure they get their appointment booked.”

The campaign is also being supported by leading charities across England including Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust.

Activity includes new advertising on TV and other channels, together with the cascade of information through GP surgeries and pharmacies.
