Is social media partly to blame for eating disorders?

Experts claim there are around 60,000 people in Lancashire suffering with an eating disorder.

It's suggested that number's a huge underestimation because many people aren't actually aware they're struggling.

2BR have been speaking to 27-year-old Josie Fowler from Preston about whether she thinks social media is making it worse for those struggling with eating disorders.

She started suffering at the age of 14, but only sought help in her late teens.

She believes if she was growing up now, her eating disorder would have been a lot harder for her to tackle:

"It might have taken me a lot longer to recover. It could've caused a lot more damage, mentally, because I was in that mindset.

"You shouldn't have to dress yourself up or make yourself look presentable because you think that's what other people want you to look like."

Josie thinks children are almost being forced to grow up too quickly too soon:

"They're already putting filters on their pictures and they're like 9-11 years old.

"Social media when I was that age wasn't available in your pocket, on your phone, straight away!

"Everything's photo shopped nowadays. You don't really see a true person - where they're tired or sat at home in their pyjamas watching TV.

"I think the whole world needs a social media detox."

Josie has been fully recovered for 3 years now after receiving hep through SEED Lancashire and Breathe Therapies.

The charity's helped hundreds of people across Lancashire who're suffering with an eating disorder and mental health issues.
