There have been some unconfirmed reports of Alabama Rot in Burnley.

However, a local vet says it's "highly unlikely".

But we've got some advice on how to stay aware of the signs to look out for.

Alabama Rot can be contracted by many different breeds of dog.

There have only been 153 confirmed cases in the UK as of March 2018.

Symptoms

- Skin lesions - often with swelling or a patch of red skin that can become an ulcer
- Loss of hair
- Dog could lick area if it's sore
- Lack of appetite
- Being sick
- Tiredness
- Kidney failure can occur in an average of three days

It's hard to stop your dog from contracting Alabama Rot because the cause of the disease isn't known.

No vaccination exists.

But experts believe it can be spread through muddy walks, so dogs should be washed clean as soon as you get home.

And if you hear reports of it being in a certain area - avoid it.

Alabama Rot is fatal for 9 out of 10 cases.

We've contacted Burnley Council for a comment.
