Burnley MP wants Labour to focus on Brexit

Julie Cooper

Published by at 4:43pm 19th February 2019

Burnley MP Julie Cooper has told 2BR she's disappointed to see her colleagues go, after seven MPs quit the Labour party.

Two North West MPs, Luciana Berger and Ann Coffey, were among them.

There are warnings there could be more resignations unless Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn addresses concerns about Brexit and antisemitism.

Burnley MP Julie Cooper told 2BR:

"I was genuinely disappointed to hear of the decision taken by the 7 Labour-elected MPs and will certainly miss them as colleagues.

"My political allegiance has always been and always will be to the Labour Party and Labour Party values of equality, opportunity for all and fairness and these endure.

"However I stood and was twice elected as a Labour MP and on a Labour Party manifesto by my constituents and I will not lose sight of that.

"Parliamentary Party unity is of course important and when challenges arise as they do every organisation, they need to be faced head on, but we can't take our eye off the ball while we do this and MPs owe it to their constituents not to be distracted from the task in hand.

"For me that means continuing to work to negotiate a Brexit deal that respects the Referendum result but gives as much protection as is possible to our constituents, and striving to protect the NHS which has been thrown into crisis by this Government's relentless pursuit of austerity politics."
