Parents of young people with mental health problems in Lancashire are being urged to speak up if they're also struggling.

New Era in Burnley are organising workshops so that they can share experiences and get support.

They have been commissioned to offer the mental health support package for parents and families who have a young person with mental health issues.

The free support is being offered in Lancashire and Cumbria.

Their Director Wendy Woodfine told 2BR says you shouldn't bottle things up:

"They become really scared when their young person is going through some sort of mental health issue and they think you'd better not talk about it.

"One young person said 'you don't need to tread on eggshells when you're near me, I need you to talk about it.'

"You might be one of those parents whose child is locked in a bedroom and you're struggling to know how to get them to come out.

"There's nobody better than the parents, the carers, the supporters who are with them day in, day out. It's family that's going to help this young person through it."

Mental health conditions affect around 1 in 10 children and young people.
