On-street parking charges scrapped

colne parking petition

Published by at 4:19pm 7th February 2019

Street parking in Nelson and Colne will remain free after plans to start charging people were scrapped.

Thousands of people signed a petition against the plans.

Locals have been fighting the plans since they were announced last year.

Today business owners in Colne welcomed the announcement and told 2BR:

"Without free parking the town would die a slow death and all the independent shops in the town would have been left picking scraps between them.

"If you imposed car parking on the street things would get worse.  Shops would close which would reduce the number of people visiting the town.

"Nobody wanted them, it would have been devastating to the small businesses."

Leader of Pendle Council, Paul White, said:

"This is a big win for businesses and residents in Pendle and I'm pleased that the County Council Leadership have taken onboard the potential issues these charges could have caused to our High Streets and stepped in to take action.

"I would like to thank Geoff Driver and the Team at Lancashire County Council for their support and help with this."
