Lancashire dad calls for social media sites to tackle suicide

Published by Laura Pratt at 3:43pm 7th February 2019

A Lancashire dad's calling on social media sites to do their bit to protect young people.

Tony Harrison says suicide can be easily searched for on sites like Instagram and Facebook.

He lost daughter Vicky (pictured) in 2010 when she took her own life.

Now Tony wants to make sure other families get help for their loved ones before it gets to that point.

It comes as Instagram vows to clamp down on self harm content on their site.

The boss of the social media site Adam Mosseri is meeting with Health Secretary Matthew Hancock today.

Mr Hancock is expected to tell Instagram to treat images about suicide in the same way they'd treat terrorist-related posts.

Tony tells 2BR the current system on Instagram isn't protecting young people:

"It's difficult to understand that they would allow people to access these distressing and graphic images.

"You get an option whether you want to carry on and look at that picture or not.

"But we'd argue that if they're already flagged up - just delete them.

"We want them to do even more - the people who profit from this should be accounted and take responsibility.

"Often the young people are far more savvy with social media, than their parents. So we need the companies to step up to the plate.

"Social media can be a good thing as well - there's can be a lot of support through groups and peers".
