Burnley refuge can't help three quarters of women suffering domestic violence

Published by at 6:00am 24th January 2019

A refuge in Burnley has told 2BR they've had to turn away three quarters of the women who need their help because they don't have enough beds.

Jane's Place is a specialist centre that helps those with mental health issues as well as drug or alcohol addiction.

Since they opened in July 2017 they have had 405 referrals, but they've only managed to accommodate 95 of those.

Safenet have refuges across Lancashire and their Manager Alex Atkinson says it's a really difficult situation to be in:

"Sometimes women have come through the door and said that if it hadn't been for Jane's Place they might not be here now, so it really is that high risk situation.

"But on top of that, all the complex needs they've got means they can't just get into any generic accommodation."

Alex added that having a safe place is vital for these women when they are so scared:

"They are fleeing for their life and for their children. It's really important to be able to offer that accommodation when somebody is able to leave.

"If you're in an abusive relationship and you're contemplating leaving, you do it when you feel it's safe to leave.

"If you don't get accommodation at that point then it could be months before you get another opportunity. That's why it's important to have that accommodation there when people need it."

Alex told us that they do contact other refuges in the UK to try and get families a safe place to stay when their beds are full, but can't always help as these women have additional needs.
