Joe, 14, called 'true superhero' in parents' tribute

Joe Cairns - boy killed in M58 crash

Published by Alice Sofield at 10:11am 10th January 2019

The parents of a 14-year-old boy killed in a crash on the M58 in Lancashire say he was a "true superhero".

A crash involving multiple vehicles on the M58 killed two people on Tuesday. 14-year-old Joe Cairns, along with Anne Kerr, 50, from Southport were in a minibus travelling to Pontville School in Ormskirk when the accident happened. Joe was a pupil there and Anne was a member of staff.

Joe was from Radcliffe in Greater Manchester. His mum and dad, Steph and Andy Cairns, have paid the following tribute to him:

"Joe, my brave boy, a true fighter with a heart of gold. An amazing sense of humour and infectious smile, a true superhero.”

Police are continuing to investigate the two collisions which took place moments after each other on the M58, on Tuesday (8th January) morning. They're calling for witnesses or anyone with relevant dash cam footage to get in touch. You can call 101 quoting log number 275 of January 8th.

A police spokesperson says:

"Our thoughts remain with the families of everyone affected by the tragic incidents on Tuesday. We have specially trained officers supporting them at this very sad and difficult time."
