Armed forces travel for free on Northern this weekend

Published by Laura Pratt at 7:39am 10th November 2018

Members of the armed forces, veterans and volunteers will be able to travel for free on Northern this weekend.

The rail service say they want to help them get to Remembrance events across the North.

This weekend will mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

Mike Paterson, Regional Director at Northern, who served in the Armed Forces for 26 years said:

"Supporting Remembrance Sunday is important to all those who work at Northern as a number of colleagues are ex-members of the armed forces.

"We want to acknowledge the contribution and sacrifices people have made and at the same time, make it as easy as possible for people to attend events on this important weekend."

The offer is open to armed forces personnel, cadets, veterans and poppy sellers.

They need to be wearing an armed forces uniform or be carrying a military ID card, or veterans can show the MOD issued Veteran's Badge.

But there will be problems as strikes are planned by members of the RMT Union.

Mike added;

"Unfortunately RMT members are set to take strike action on Saturday 10 November and there will be a reduced service across the Northern network.

"Anyone planning to travel is advised to plan ahead and check our website for full details of which services will be running."

Only around 30% of services will be running.

That means the service will be busy - with both Remembrance events and the Manchester Christmas Markets opening this weekend too.
