Calls for tougher food allergy laws

Megan Lee

5:01pm 8th November 2018

There are calls for laws about food allergies to be toughened up.

The Anaphylaxis Campaign will be meeting with food regulators to see if it's a possibility.

Yesterday, two Lancashire men were jailed for a total of five years for the manslaughter of Megan Lee.

The 15-year-old ate a takeaway from the Royal Spice in Oswaldtwistle when she had an allergic reaction.

Her order stated she was allergic to nuts and prawns - yet the food was covered in peanut protein.

Mohammed Kuddus and Harun Rashid were jailed for two and three years respectively.

They'll also serve concurrent sentences for food safety failings, and are banned from having a job in management in the food industry.

Lynne Regent is the CEO of the Anaphylaxis Campaign.

She tells 2BR people need to realise the severity of allergies;

"We still have a lot to do as an organisation, to raise awareness and ensure that people will allergies can live their lives safely.

"People are becoming more aware, but there's still a lot to do.

"The laws are there, but they could be taken further.

"It's so important the laws are enforced and the local authority in Lancashire have worked brilliantly with police on the Megan Lee case.

"But this doesn't always happen".

Megan's parents Adam and Gemma say that they will also be doing all they can to stop other families going through their heartbreak.

They will work with the Anaphylaxis campaign and hope Megan's legacy will have an impact.
