Ex boxers trying to stop knife crime

2:43pm 7th November 2018

A former professional boxer has been speaking to teenagers in Lancashire today to try and stop them getting caught up in knife crime.

Robin Reid was at Jennings Gym in Coppull this morning, along with anti-bullying campaigner Stuart Maddox.

The gym is run by former professional boxer Michael Jennings and his brother David.

Michael was stabbed on a night out in Manchester, along with fellow boxer Michael Gomez.

He told 2BR:

"Two lads jumped out from an alley behind us.  I thought one of them had punched me, but when I looked down there was blood all over me, he'd stabbed me in my back.

"The other kid slashed him {Michael Gomez} across his arm, he was in a bad way.

"He had to be put under local anaesthetic, which he had a reaction to and flatlined.  He died for a few seconds and then they brought him back to life."

Michael says more now needs to be done to educate people about the impact carrying a knife can have:

"It's happening too much, knives are becoming an every day thing.

"If the kids can be made aware of why we don't want them to do it, what effects it has then it's a massive deal."

"I think it's too easy now for kids to get their hands on knives and think it's a normal thing.  It's not normal to carry a knife about."
