The Mall car park attendants jailed

the mall blackburn

Published by Laura Pratt at 2:01pm 12th October 2018

A married couple have been jailed for stealing over £35,000 from the car park at The Mall in Blackburn.

John Riley and Alan Shelton were jailed at Preston Crown Court today (12/10/18).

They were sentenced to 30 and 36 weeks respectively.

The car park attendants were caught stealing from the meters in The Mall between 2015 and 2016.

Two anonymous letters were sent to the company bosses admitting their offences.

Following a full audit of the machine's computer systems, there were numerous gaps in their transaction logs, which showed when the machines had been interfered with.

John Riley and Alan Shelton were identified on CCTV attending the machines on some of those occasions.

Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West Victoria Agullo said:

"John Riley and Alan Shelton were clearly acting together to commit these offences in order to fund a lavish lifestyle, which was way beyond their means.

"Mr Riley initially made limited admissions, but denied that his husband had been involved.

"However CCTV footage showed Riley attending the parking payment machines on numerous occasion, with no legitimate reason to do so, whilst Sheltion acted as a lookout.

"When faced with the overwhelming evidence against them, they were left with no other option than to plead guilty to the thefts."
