Rivington Terraced Gardens to celebrate the end of Winter Hill blaze

winter hill 9th july update #lancashire

Published by Alice Sofield at 5:01am 1st September 2018

Today, Rivington Terraced Gardens host a concert as a huge thank you to every single person who worked on the Winter Hill fire.

The 100-year-old gardens were just metres away from going up in flames, if it wasn't for the dedication of fire crews and volunteers.

Andrew's the heritage programmes manager, he says it'll be a massive celebration:

"They've worked very hard to save the gardens, the gardens are beautiful.

"It seems that's the logical place to have the party, so we're going back there.

"Hopefully people will have a fantastic time and really feel the support that we and they have had throughout.

"If we can, we'll raise some money as well and really celebrate their achievements."

He tells us how they'll be thanked tonight:

"The Firecrews and anybody involved in the fire will be admitted for free and will get food and drink for free.

"Beyond that we are going to raise money through the ticket and the sales and donate them to the 7 organisations and charities that have been involved in fighting the fire."

The concert will raise funds for the Firefighters of Winter Hill.

Andrew says that the efforts of the fire crew and the volunteers made a massive difference:

"It could have turned out so much worse, I honestly think that if the fire crew hasn't worked so hard, if our volunteers hadn't been there - then the fire would have bridged that road and we would have been talking about a very different situation now.

"So it's a huge achievement and one that deserves to be celebrated."

Casper Mason, Toria Woof, Rambling Rob Young and James Holt are just some of the artists performing today, to find out who else part of the line up check out the Rivington Terraced Gardens' Facebook page.

The event is today from 2pm to 10pm on the Great Lawn in the Terraced Gardens. You can book your tickets here.
