UPDATE: Life in prison for man who murdered Darwen's Jay Jay

45 year old Jack Costello from Rishton guilty of Jay Jay's murder

Published by Alice Sofield at 3:23pm 7th August 2018 (Updated 5:06pm 7th August 2018)

Jack James Costello, 45, has been found guilty of murdering Darwen's Jay Jay Taylor.

The father-of-four from Rishton,(pictured above) denied murder but admitted to manslaughter.

He's been found guilty by a majority at Preston Crown Court this afternoon.

Costello has been sentenced to life with a minimum of 19 years. He's already served 188 days in custody.

A second man, Kayle Smith, 30, of Value Street, Darwen, had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to assaulting Jay Jay before Costello’s attack.

The pair were arrested earlier this year following the incident at Esco-Bar in The Green.

The incident

During a night out in Darwen back in January, Jay Jay Taylor (pictured below) was in Esco Bar after enjoying a trip to the bowling alley with friends, when he suffered a stab wound to his neck caused by a champagne flute.

The 23-year-old Lancashire lad was rushed to Royal Preston Hospital but sadly died later that same day. A Home Office post mortem examination concluded that Jay Jay died as a result of the serious injury to his neck.

A murder investigation was launched and following CCTV enquiries detectives established two men, Costello and Smith, had attacked the victim.

The footage showed Jay Jay at the bar with friends. He was approached by Smith who, following a brief conversation, head-butted the victim. Several people intervened, with Smith walking away and talking to Costello.

Costello then approached the victim, putting his arm around Jay Jay’s neck and biting his ear. After intervention from others, Costello was briefly separated from the Darwen lad before he thrust a champagne glass into Jay Jay’s neck. The glass shattered on impact, causing fatal injuries. Costello then threw the broken glass at Jay Jay and continued to try and assault him before eventually being restrained by others.

Both Smith and Costello made off from the scene and were later arrested by police.

Smith will be sentenced on Thursday (August 9th).
