People still ignoring Winter Hill road closures

belmont road closed sign

Published by Laura Pratt at 11:38am 16th July 2018

There's a warning to Lancashire residents that roads around the Winter Hill fire remain closed.

It's after several incidents that have seen people ignoring them.

We're told this put fire crews in danger, as they are working in the road and aren't expecting traffic.

Some hosepipes have also been split as vehicles drive over them.

The fire service has also warned that whilst flames are no longer visible, temperatures in the ground can still reach up to 500 degrees.

And smoke is still an issue that crews are currently tackling.

A lot of walkers and cyclists are also ignoring the closures, and are therefore being escorted off the scene by police officers and mountain rescue teams who are already overstretched.

All trails and footpaths also remain closed to the public as the area remains dangerous.

It's as fire crews remain on site for yet another day - but say the fire is subsiding.

Grass has also been seen regrowing on the scorched land.
