(Updated 4:28pm 11th July 2018)

England haven't reached a World Cup semi-final since 1990.

The FIFA World Cup was held in Italy from 8th June to 8th July.

We thought we'd flashback to that year to see what else was happening back then.

TV Shows

Going Live - presented by a younger looking Phillip Schofield

Byker Grove - Well known for featuring youthful looking Ant and Dec who starred in the show as children

The Crystal Maze - Richard O'Brien was the host back in the 1990's

Chuckle Vision - A popular program which featured the silly Chuckle siblings.

Art Attack - The very first episode of Art Attack aired only 7 days after the 1990's World Cup began.

1990's Number One

During the tournament in 1990 only two songs managed to get to number one in the singles charts

The first being 'World in Motion' by England New Order, which reached number one on the 9th June as the years World Cup began.

Still to this day, the song is being used to celebrate football and to spur England on to success.

After two weeks, 'World of Motion' was knocked off the top spot on the 23rd June by Elton John with his song(s) 'Sacrifice/Healing Hands'.

The song(s) remained number one for the remainder of the FIFA World Cup.

1990's Cinema

The 1990's proved to be the year for cinema as many well loved films went on to produce sequels after the originals were clear successes.

'Gremlins 2: The New Batch' - The sequel was released June 15th 1990

RoboCop 2 - Released June 22nd 1990

Die Hard 2- Released July 4th 1990

'Ghost' - The film was released on July 13th just a few days after Germany claimed their third victory on winning the World Cup.

What was in the news-

4th July - The day England's hopes of World Cup glory were ended by a dreaded penalty shootout which saw them defeated in the semi-final by West Germany after a 1-1 draw in Turin

July 7th-8th - In tennis, Martina Navratilova of the United States won the 1990 Wimbledon Championships

July 8th - The victorious event that saw West Germany defeat Argentina 1-0, which resulted in them winning the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

July 16th - After England's lack of success into getting to the final of the tournanment, Graham Taylor, the manager of Aston Villa F.C., replaced Bobby Robson  as the England team's new manager.

Corrie's cobbled street dramas -

The 1990's held many dramatic episodes for Coronation Street.

On News Year,  after nine years of marriage, Deirdre Barlow threw her husband Ken Barlow onto the cobbled street after she found out he was having a three-month affair with secretary Wendy Crozier.

On the 24th December 1990 Sally Webster delivered a daughter in the back of Don Brennan's taxi on the way to hospital. Her child was named Rosie and would carry on featuring in the show

25th December 1990 witnessed the birth of David Tilsley, who would go on to become one of corrie's well loved characters. He was born to Gail McIntyre who has now been a character on the soap for more then 40 years.

1990's Fashion

It has been said that the 1990's fashion is coming back into style with many people wearing the well loved accessories that the 90's had to offer, and I am  sure many of you will remember wearing these items yourselves;

  • Bucket Hats
  • Leather Blazers
  • Pedal Pushers
  • Halter-Neck Tops
  • Combat Trousers
  • Rounded Over-sized Sunnies
  • Dungarees
  • Tie-Dye
  • Retro Sports Wear

And finally waistcoats - which are deeming more popular as Gareth Southgate continuously flaunts the waistcoat look!

What a year!
