UPDATED: Large grass fire by A56 in Lancashire

(Updated 6:37am 6th July 2018)

Lancashire firefighters had to deal with a  large grass fire by the A56 at Rising Bridge yesterday.

The bypass had to be shut between Junction 8 of M65 and on the A56

This morning one lane Southbound remains closed.

Lancashire Police are urging people to avoid the area.

Emergency Services including Lancashire Fire and Rescue are in attendance. There are approximately 40 firefighters tackling the blaze.

The fire is out but the ground by the A56 is still smouldering.

Farmers in Stonefold are helping our county's fire service with their muck spreaders.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, however reports claim it's thought to have been started by a discarded cigarette.

Lisa Bloor from Haslingden told 2BR about what she could see as she waits close to the incident:

"There's a tree line and you can see all the smoke and the fire engines are just back and forth constantly.

"It's the A56 and people tend to throw things out their windows and they just don't think about what they're doing. It's so dry out there. It's not confirmed that anything like that has caused this, but it did start on the embanking.

"Everybody helps out around here, it's a good community."
