"When he's awake and we know he'll be OK, then it will hit us"

Ethan Hunt Burnley lad sepsis

6:00am 22nd February 2018

The family of Lancashire teenager Ethan say they're doing OK - but are still numb after his close call with death.

Sixteen-year-old Ethan Hunt almost died after what seemed like a cold turned out to be sepsis.

On the 8th of February, Ethan's mum Melanie found him with a rash that covered his entire body.

After rushing him to Royal Blackburn Hospital, Ethan was diagnosed with sepsis.

He suffered from three cardiac arrests, before being put into an induced coma.

He was then transferred to Wythenshawe Hospital on the outskirts of Manchester, for specialist treatment.

There, he had to have both of his legs amputated from the knee down.

Sister Jodie's been telling 2BR about what happened;

Almost two weeks on, Ethan is still in a coma and has no idea he's lost both of his legs.

Jodie adds no one fully understands how close they were to losing him;

"He's on life support, people don't understand how serious it was - until you see it.

"Nothing could have prepared me for what I saw. It was heartbreaking, shocking, I felt sick.

"The worst moment of my life so far".

It's now a waiting game for when Ethan finally wakes up - and whilst the family are excited to finally see him getting better, they're devastated that they have to tell him about the amputation.

But Jodie says she believes in him;

"I think he'll deal with it well in time, and will make something positive out of it".

Now Ethan's aunt and uncle are raising money to help support Ethan after he wakes up.

They hope to put the money towards a new pair of legs for him - and to help him adapt to life.

They've already raised over £6,500 so far.
