Repair work begins on burst pipe

branch road

8:31am 18th November 2017
(Updated 9:26am 18th November 2017)

Work continues this morning to fix a burst pipe in Blackburn.

It caused Branch Road to be closed overnight as water flooded the area - and it's still off limits this morning.

United Utilities have been at the scene overnight and are continuing to fix the pipe.

They say they expect the road to reopen at some point today.

 Here's what people were dealing with last night;

At 12.14am this morning (18/11/17), United Utilities had this update;

“Our team are onsite and have started working on repairing the burst pipe, whilst the repairs are ongoing we are continuing to move water around the area and our water on wheels tankers are pumping water into the network.

"This will restore the water supply to all of our customers.

"We are really sorry for the continued inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”

And here's what the situation looks like this morning;

Blackburn with Darwen Council say the water is being pumped into the network at various locations by water tankers.

The actual water main has been repaired, and about 20 tonnes of material will be brought in this morning to start backfilling around the pipe.

The main will be brought back into action over the next 24 hours.

 It means that whilst most UU customers have seen their water supplies restored, some are still without this morning.

Fire crews were also called to the scene to help clear away the chlorinated water from the road.

Operation Merlin was declared, and they got help from the Environment Agency to begin pumping the water away from the propertied it might have affected.

Locals have been thanked for their patience.

Clean up work's also started on Branch Road to get rid of all the debris left from the flooding.

Properties affected by the water shortage can find the latest updates from United Utilities HERE.
