1:59pm 12th September 2017
(Updated 6:15am 13th September 2017)

We're bracing ourselves for getting hit by Storm Aileen tonight.

So here's some tips on how to stay safe if you have to go out on our roads.

Aileen is set to bring huge gusts of wind, along with rainfall, from 9pm tonight until 9am tomorrow morning.

An amber weather warning is in place across the North West.

We're being told to avoid driving at all if we can - but there are some safety tips if you need to travel tonight.

Drivers need to take extra care whilst out on motorways and some major A roads, as those winds could send us off course.

Wind gusts could hit in excess of 60 miles per hour, and drivers of lorries, caravans and motorbikes being warned to stay safe.

Here's some top tips from Highways England;

- Slow down as spray from the roads can make it more difficult to see and be seen
- Keep distance from other cars so you have more time to react
- If your tyres lose grip, ease off the accelerator so you can gain control
