Lancashire cops stop man with axe

5:00am 13th August 2017

Two hero policemen have explained the moment they jumped on a man with an axe.

They'd got reports of someone smashing up shops and buildings in Accrinton town centre in July.

PC Graham Hartley and PCSO James Southworth spotted the man near Arndale car park.

He'd already targeted the Mount Hospital and the Job Centre on Oak Street.

Graham tells us what happened;

"James and myself noticed a man walking towards us - with a giant pick axe in his hand.

"I told him to drop the pick axe but he's carried on walking, totally ignoring me.

"I run forward, jump onto his back, try to detain him and grab the axe".

He's said it was terrifying looking back at what happened - but in the moment Graham did what he had to.

Graham explains at one point the axe got worryingly close;

"He's brought the axe back over his head, it's come to my head but I've managed to duck.

"I grab his right hand and force the axe back down to the floor".

But luckily they managed to overpower the man before things went too far;

"We had to grab hold of him, detain him and get the axe. He might have harmed himself or someone else".

Now the police officers tell us they want to make sure Accrington stays a safe place.

And their quick thinking and protective nature has been praised by the community.
