Near misses in drowning need to be talked about

SWIM SAFE BECKY

6:00am 31st May 2017

A Lancashire mum wants more people who've almost drowned to step forward with their stories.

Becky Ramsey says their messages are so powerful - and they might not even realise it;

"It's frustrating that these people who had near misses aren't telling their stories.

"They're the lucky ones - I should be saying Dylan had a near miss, but I'm not.

"If they'd talked about their near misses - maybe I wouldn't be sat here today".

Dylan was just 13-year-old when he died in a quarry in 2011.

Since then Becky launched 'Doing it for Dylan' - to stop others needlessly dying like he did.

And she tells us the number of people who have almost died in conditions similar to Dylan is shocking;

"I just looked on RNLI one day and they had 24 shout outs in 24 hours, and I couldn't believe it.

"Why isn't this public knowledge, why don't people know about this?"

Now the numbers of people dying in open water are beginning to drop - but Becky doesn't want to get too complacent about that.

She's not going to stop campaigning about the dangers of open water.

Becky tells us people just don't understand what can happen;

"It's a skill to swim in open water, it's not a god given right just because you can swim in a swimming pool.

"It's just like crossing a road - but you wouldn't cross a motorway. It's exactly the same".

But she's telling us things are finally changing for the better.

She's having more people get in touch - and sharing stories that don't end in tragedy;

"It got to a stage when I was only hearing from people after a tragedy - now I'm hearing from them before tragedy struck".
