Student hit in head with hammer during unprovoked attack

Ambulances at Preston

5:08pm 19th May 2017

A student was hit over the head with a hammer during an unprovoked attack in Preston.

The 19-year-old was walking over the railway bridge on Pedder Street at around 11:45pm last night (18th May) when it happened.

He was approached from behind by the attacker who demanded his possessions.

The man then knocked the victim to the ground and took his wallet and a sat nav device.

He then ran off towards St Walburge's Church.

The student was taken to Royal Preston Hospital but thankfully the injuries weren't serious.

Here's where it happened:

DS Jerry Sturgess, of Preston CID, said:

"This was a completely unprovoked attack on someone simply walking home after work.

"It was fortunate that the victim wasn't seriously hurt particularly after being hit with a hammer.

"There is a good chance that the offender is known in the area, may have targeted other students or was hanging around beforehand.

"If you saw them or have information, please come forward."

The offender is described as white, around 5ft, 8ins and of slim build.

He was wearing a grey hoody and black tracksuit bottoms with a dark coloured snood or similar covering the lower part of his face.

Anyone with information about the incident or about the offenders can contact police on 101 quoting log reference 1705 of May 18th.
