Man sentenced for tobacco fraud
1:19pm 21st April 2017
A Blackburn man's been sentenced to 42 weeks jail, suspended for 18 months, for tobacco fraud.
61-year-old Ismail Issat was also given 100 hours unpaid community work and had to pay £750 costs.
It's after he evaded more than £25,000 tax on fake tobacco.
On the 22 March 2016, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) inspected an industrial storage unit at Carlinghurst Business Park, George Street West, Blackburn.
The unit was being used to store retail goods as well as 50,800 smuggled, counterfeit cigarettes and 59.3kgs of counterfeit hand rolling tobacco (HRT).
The tobacco items were seized and the Excise Duty evaded on them was £24,921.81.
On 13 April 2016, HMRC officers visited Issat at his shop, Cheaper Market Ltd, and found 600 illegal cigarettes and 850g of illegal HRT in the store room at the rear of the premises in a carrier bag. The Excise Duty evaded was £387.
HMRC evidence showed Issat had been renting the industrial unit since December 2013.
This was the third time illegal tobacco products had been found in Issat’s shop.
The estimated Excise Duty evasion for the previous seizures was £1,020.62 and £2,100.74.
Issat pleaded guilty to two charges of the fraudulent evasion of Excise Duty contrary to S170 of Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) 1979 on 4 April 2017.
