Relief for the Empire Theatre - but it's not out of the woods yet

12:01am 20th October 2016

Over the weekend we told you the incredible news that the Empire Theatre in Burnley was no longer up for auction.

The Duchy of Lancaster had listened to the calls from the Empire Theatre Trust, who have been campaigning endlessly for it's survival.

Member Sophie Gibson tells us it was the news they had all be hoping for;

"It's great that it's got a second chance to go even further, and we've not just been halted where we are so far".

The old theatre on St. James Street in the town centre lives to stand another day.

Acting chair of the trust Sean McCree says they are thankful for the extra time from the Duchy;

"It's really exciting news for us because we had to put everything on hold. How important it is as a potential theatre, and how it's got historic significance.

So the Duchy very kindly took it off the auction list to give us time to complete the viability study".

But the trust can't sigh with relief just yet - as they now has a nervous wait for the viability study results.

These results will let them know one way or another if the structure of the building can be saved - and if it's safe enough to be used once again by the public.

Sophie tells us they have a lot of worries as they nervously wait the results;

"We know what we'd like the outcome to be, we felt quite confident. But then there's the reality of what it could be.

The building is old, it's been empty for a long time. Is there still a demand for something like this in the town? Can it be viable to being it back to life and run it for the town and community?"

The results from the study are expected in the next week.
