Arfield back for Clarets

Burnley FC

8:42am 28th November 2014

Sean Dyche has confirmed he welcomes midfielder Scott Arfield back into his squad ahead of Saturday’s visit of Aston Villa.

The Scot missed last weekend’s trip to Stoke City with a knock, but is now back in contention as Burnley seek a third consecutive Premier League victory against the Villains.

Meanwhile, Nathaniel Chalobah, who suffered a minor injury on international duty earlier this month against France will also return to the fold.

However, the Clarets boss has also revealed that he will have to make a late decision on the fitness of Michael Duff who was forced to limp off the pitch towards the end of the win at the Britannia Stadium with a calf problem.

Dyche said: “We’re looking pretty clear. Scott Arfield comes back into contention. He got a knock last week, but it was nothing too major and we are happy with how quickly that’s settled down.

“Nathaniel Chalobah also had a minor knock, but he is back in contention, too.

“There are a few knocks and bruises. Michael Duff has got a question mark and he’s touch and go. We don’t think it’s anything major, but we’ll have to decide over the next 24 hours to see if that settles down enough.”

The Burnley manager was also pleased to report on the progress of Sam Vokes who stepped up his rehabilitation programme earlier this week.

The Welsh international made his return to action in a Development Squad fixture against Carlisle United on Tuesday and got himself on the scoresheet in a 2-0 win.

And while Dyche maintains there is no timescale on when his striker could be available for first-team selection, he is delighted that Vokes has taken another step on his way back to match fitness.

He added: “Sam Vokes has had a good week with the reserve game. He played a half and nicked himself a goal, which is great and he’s still on line for his recovery period.

“We’re delighted and it’s the first step on what we hope is the end of a long journey for him. He’s been training with us for a few weeks now and he’s been in good form on the training field.

“There is still no rush until he is ready and I’ve suggested many times that we want him to be absolutely spot on and right, mentally and physically. That’s the most important thing. Of course, though, he is showing good signs.”
