Allan Compton KC prosecuted Rebecca Searing, a palliative care nurse, accused of the murder of her husband on 12th February 2022. Following a two week trial, at Chelmsford Crown Court, the defendant was convicted of murder and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 17 years’ imprisonment. During the trial she alleged she was a victim of domestic violence and following verbal abuse in the early hours of the morning, lost her self-control and stabbed and killed her husband. The prosecution case was that, whilst the relationship featured historic episodes of violence on both sides, none had occurred for a number of years. On 12th February 2022, contrary to the defendant’s case, she had spent the evening drinking and contemplating attacking her husband, before stabbing him twice as he was sleeping in bed.
