Jonas Milner, instructed by Luke Gittos of Murray Hughman Solicitors, secured the acquittal of his client following an 8-week money laundering trial at Southwark Crown Court.
The prosecution alleged a scheme which generated over £10 million through the smuggling of alcohol into the UK. It was alleged that alcohol was purchased in France, where a lower amount of duty applied, smuggled into the UK and was then sold on to cash and carry businesses for significant profit. The Crown alleged that the scheme generated huge sums of cash, which was laundered by the six defendants, as well as being used to purchase further alcohol from abroad, thus rebooting the scheme.
After a complex trial involving significant legal issues surrounding the definition of criminal property, the jury unanimously acquitted Jonas’ client.
