Tracy Ayling KC and Alastair Smith, instructed by CPS Nottingham, successfully prosecuted Dr Peter Brooks for two counts of attempted murder, attempted arson with intent to endanger life and possession of a bladed article in a public place.
Dr Brooks, a plastic surgeon at Nottingham University Hospital, had attempted to murder a fellow surgeon, Mr Graeme Perks, who was involved in Dr Brooks’ disciplinary proceedings. He broke into Mr Perks’ home in the middle of the night and attempted to kill Mr Perks both by stabbing him and also by attempting to burn the house down (at a time when Mr Perks’ wife and son were asleep upstairs in their beds).
During the trial, Dr Brooks had absented himself, gone on hunger strike and sacked his legal team.
On 9 June 2025, Dr Brooks was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years.
