Pump Court

Katherine Higgs represents defendant acquitted of obtaining leave to remain in the UK by deception

Cases 6 Aug 24

Katherine Higgs, instructed by Paul Block of Levy & Co, represented a defendant acquitted of obtaining leave to remain in the UK by deception following a six week trial at Woolwich Crown Court.

Katherine’s client was alleged to have been a beneficiary of a conspiracy involving corrupt officials in a local government courthouse in Lagos, Nigeria. The courthouse supplied customary marriage certificates to Nigerian nationals married to European nationals which were said to have been false. The certificates were then used in successful applications to the UK Home Office for EU settled status, prior to the UK’s exit from the EU.
