Dean George KC’s client, a Sikh Afghan man who clear CCTV footage showed fatally stabbing another man 14 times, was acquitted of murder following a trial at Southwark Crown Court,
The stabbing took place against a background of threats and violence by a group who subsequently attended outside the defendant’s house where his elderly parents and two brothers were present. The defendant and other family members came on to the street (Dean’s client with a knife) to ward off the other group who were said to be violent and carrying weapons, which they were intent on using. During the course of the trial, Dean cross-examined police officers about their failure to act earlier when complaints about the other group were made. The jury complained about the conduct of the main police officer’s conduct and unprofessionalism (and he was subsequently reprimanded for pulling faces at the defendant’s evidence and required to leave the Court room for the remainder of the trial).
The jury unanimously rejected the prosecution’s case that he was guilty of murder (finding that his actions amounted to manslaughter).
