In October 2020, Brian Altman QC and Jacqueline Carey appeared as counsel to the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) in its 3 weeks of virtually held public hearings of the investigation into the institutional responses to allegations of child sexual abuse involving the late Lord Janner of Braunstone QC. The investigation report, published 19 October 2021, was highly critical of Leicestershire Police’s handling of two enquiries into allegations made against Lord Janner and found that, in general, in the 1970s and 1980s Leicestershire County Council’s procedures for detecting and responding to allegations of sexual abuse were inadequate.
