Ashraf Khan appointed as an Independent Reviewer and Appeals Assessor for the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries

Chambers is delighted to announce that Ashraf Khan has been appointed as an Independent Reviewer and Appeals Assessor for the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA).

The IFoA is the UK’s chartered professional body for actuaries. It regulates and sets professional standards for over 30,000 members in the United Kingdom and internationally through its independent disciplinary scheme.

As an Independent Reviewer and Appeals Assessor, Ashraf will undertake an independent role within the IFoA’s disciplinary framework. The appointment includes reviewing decisions of Adjudication Panels and determining applications for permission to appeal, applying the relevant provisions of the Disciplinary Scheme and ensuring that disciplinary decisions are fair, reasoned and procedurally robust.

The role requires careful scrutiny of first-instance decisions, independent legal analysis and the application of principles of procedural fairness, natural justice and proportionality. Independent Reviewers and Appeals Assessors play an important role in maintaining confidence in the IFoA’s disciplinary process by ensuring that decisions are reached in accordance with the Institute’s regulatory framework.

This appointment reflects Ashraf’s extensive experience in professional discipline and regulatory law. He currently serves as a Legally Qualified Chair for the Architects Registration Board and the Health and Care Professions Council, a Legal Adviser or Legal Assessor to several professional regulators, a Legally Qualified Adviser in police misconduct proceedings, an Independent Disciplinary Panel Chair and Panel Member for UK Athletics, and a member of The Football Association’s Safeguarding Review Panel. He is also a member of the Attorney General’s Panel of Regulatory Advocates.
