Last wish granted for Preston patient

last wish

(Updated 3:31pm 17th February 2017)

A dying patient at Royal Preston Hospital had her last wishes granted by nurses.

The critical care team helped Ann Black in her final days.

38-year-old Ann had a spinal tumour that left her paralysed and with just days to live.

She set up a bucket list before she died - and staff on the ward wanted to help get as many things ticked off the list as possible.

Ann had one last Christmas Day, a pamper session, and got to spend time with a Pets At Therapy (PAT) dog.

She was a huge dog lover who tragically had to rehome her own when she fell ill.

After the visits Ann said:

"The two dogs Lola and Iskra are beautiful and spending time with them really helps me to relax and cheers me up.

"I have always had dogs and I am a big dog lover."

PAT dogs can bring comfort and happiness to people with a range of disabilities and emotional needs, including those in nursing homes, rehab facilities, hospices, special needs schools and more.

Rachel Moses, a Consultant Physiotherapist, arranged things for Ann to help her achieve as many things on her bucket list as possible.

She said:

"We wanted to make Ann as happy as we possibly could and myself and all the staff here on the critical care unit have done everything within our power to help her achieve her bucket list.

"When Ann told me how much she loved dogs I really wanted to arrange for her to spend some time with a PAT dog- it was such a pleasure to see how much joy it brought to her and our staff love the dogs too!"

Ann passed away peacefully on Saturday 11th February.
