Blackburn mum joins meningitis jab fight

Meningitis Adele and daughter who died

10:00am 15th February 2017

A Blackburn mum is fighting to get all children vaccinated for Meningitis B.

At the moment babies can get the jab on the NHS.

But campaigners want the injection to be given to all under 5's for free.

Adele St Pierre-Roberts paid for her twins to get the vaccine after her daughter died from an unknown rapid set of infection.

She told 2BR:

"It makes me angry that they're choosing not to protect children who are born after a certain date, because it's one of the biggest childhood killers.

"It was £180 per child which I believe is cheaper than it was previously."

Adele thinks it's wrong that parents are having to pay, especially because some can't afford to protect their children.

She told us what it was like as they got used to life without their daughter:

"You can't see a way forward and it takes a lot of support and people around you to show you that there is a way forward

"In our situation we didn't have any other children so it was going back to being childless again, the two of us instead of three of us.

"I wouldn't wish it on any parent.

"We went to support groups and there's other children that's been lost to meningitis. You've got cases of three hours and people who didn't have a rash.

"It's just shocking how quickly it can kill your child."
